Adoption, kinship, and foster care can be social, emotional, and cultural contexts with unique mental health considerations for children, adolescents, and young adults, particularly when children enter foster care or are adopted from adverse environments that included abuse, neglect, or other forms of chronic stress. Specific mental health conditions—such as reactive attachment disorder, disinhibited social engagement disorder, or oppositional defiant disorder—can develop in children and adolescents as a trauma response to family disruption or other adverse childhood experiences. Consequently, it is imperative to utilize a trauma-informed approach in supporting and interacting with individuals in adoption, kinship, or foster care settings.
Join NAMI Greater Cleveland for Building Connections: Mental Health in Adoption and Foster Care Settings. Facilitated by Rosalynne Sommer, MSSA, LISW-S, Director of Foster Care and Adoption at Bellefaire JCB, this virtual presentation occurring on Tuesday, August 2 at 12pm via Zoom will provide education on mental health conditions that can be prevalent among children and adolescents in foster care or adopted from adverse circumstances, as well as dismantle some of the stigma surrounding adoption and foster care, highlight resilience and recovery, and enumerate strategies for support and coping for parents, teachers, and other caregivers.
