Meet Karly and Erica! They have been together for 12 years and have a 3-month old daughter and 6-year old foster son. They have been MCJFS foster parents for 3 years and have had 3 children placed in their home.
Beginnings
We’ve both worked with kids all our lives and we were ready to have a family. What better way to start our own family than to help kids who need a family!
Likes
Being a foster parent is so rewarding. When you see a child accomplish something new or do things they would never otherwise be able to do, it’s amazing. We love seeing the kids in our home experience a big family who cares about them. We also love our MCJFS coordinator – we feel like we can rely on her for a lot.
Challenges
Juggling appointments and visits can be challenging. We rely on our village to help us out. We have a great support system of people who know and understand the dynamics in our home and who can jump in to help when needed.
Advice
To be a foster parent, it’s important to be patient and resilient, and to keep an open mind. Try to see the positives in a situation and know that you’re changing a child’s life, even if it doesn’t always feel like it.
