Take a Leap Into Foster Care

 Medina County Job and Family Services is hosting a Foster Care Open House on Thursday, February 29^th from 6-8pm at the agency office (232 Northland Drive, Medina). Anyone interested in learning more about the need for foster caregivers in Medina County and what it takes to become licensed is invited to stop by during that time. Agency staff will be available to answer questions and provide information about the program and licensing process. Additionally, a licensed foster parent will be present to answer questions and share personal experiences. Registration is not required. 

The ”Take a Leap Into Foster Care” campaign is part of a regional effort to raise awareness of the dire shortage and great need for more licensed foster caregivers. Over the last two years, the number of foster homes in Ohio has steadily and significantly decreased while the number of children in the foster care system continues to increase. In Medina County, the number of children in custody has increased by 50% since the beginning of 2022.

Currently there are almost 150 children in Medina County’s foster care system and only 50 licensed families to care for them. Medina County Job and Family Services aims to keep children close to their community by having “Medina homes for Medina kids.” We launched a “Twenty Four in ‘24” campaign at the beginning of this year to recruit and license enough homes to make this possible.

Foster parents provide daily care and supervision, acting in place of the parent to ensure all needs of the child are met until children are reunified with their parents or a permanent living situation is arranged for them. The process to become a foster parent includes application and training. Medina County Job and Family Services provides a dedicated staff member to assist individuals through the process. Foster parents receive financial assistance, personal support, ongoing training, and medical benefits for the children in their care.
